subjects Vincent van Gogh made his own, the landscapes that are most familiar to the public today. Yet Van Gogh was passionate about portraits as well. We might
even go so far as to say that passion in paint was the essence of van Gogh. Biography Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), whose tragic and troubled life has now become
popular history, was the son of a Dutch minister. He was a school teacher in England, and a missionary to destitute color miners in Belgium before he taught himself
to paint (Cole 256). Since he served no apprenticeship, suffered from doubt and debt, and institutionalized himself, possibly from schizophrenia, but felt the need to continue his
painting, van Gogh is often seen as the artist for whom his gift and his passion was both a blessing and a curse. After having failed as an art dealer
and a Protestant evangelist, Van Gogh decided at the age of 27 to become an artist. He received a smattering of formal education, but mostly, with singular feverishness and dedication,
studied and practiced on his own. In his 33rd year he moved to Paris ,developing into a brilliant colorist. Two years later he moved south to Arles, producing bold, bright
paintings and drawings at a miraculous rate. He started suffering bouts of disorientation and called it insanity. He moved north to Auvers, near Paris, continuing to paint wonderfully. He killed
himself at the age of 37. He and his brother Theo who had supported him financially and emotionally throughout his career had been able to sell only one painting while
