However, while both novels express nuance and sensitivity in how their young female protagonist is presented, they are very different books that emphasize different aspects of Canadian culture in the early and mid-twentieth century, which -- at their most basic level -- indicate the difference between a womans story as told by a woman (e.g. Alice Munro) and a womans story as told by a man assuming a female voice (e.g. Richard B. Wright). This is not to imply that Wright is sexist or that he does not do a credible job at assuming a female persona -- his success is evidenced by his books glowing critical reception. However, an examination of these texts shows that, unlike Lives of Girls and Women by Munro, Wrights Clara Callan, presents a vision of the female world that is more surface oriented than in Munros text. His book does not delve as deeply before the surface, political exterior of how women interact. Clara Callan is set in the middle of the 1930s and the Great Depression, and its protagonist is somewhat older then in Munros narrative. Clara teaches school in a small Ontario town and is old enough to be considered a spinster. Her life is contrasted against the life of her sister, Nora, who is not as down-to-earth as Clara and considered the prettier of the two. Nora travels to New York where she is chosen for a starring role in a radio soap opera. The narrative is told in the form of diary entries and letters between the two sisters., and this medium is excellent in conveying the stories of the two young women, as their lives become increasingly complex.
