propelled by capitalism and industry? While that is the case, there are various approaches to this topic. Some people and theorists support a point of view that goes to
communism instead. They contend that capitalism is just not fair and a well known initiator of this perspective is of course Karl Marx. Yet, many great thinkers to follow such
as Cornel West would also support Marxism. And while some people support this ideology that contends paradise can be realized with cooperation and sharing, others think that the human spirit
is better propelled by the desire for wealth. Indeed, Americans are conspicuous consumers and their spending habits seem to drive the economy. In some ways, the desire for wealth is
good, but this of course goes against the idea that compromise is better and the large gap between the haves and the have-nots should be closed. Many theorists have written
on this topic. Katz (1997) contends that "the modern separation of economic from moral concerns has never been secure" (p.277). He says that in reembedding the marketplace and subordination
production in order to serve a substantive way of life, one incurs considerable moral costs (1997). Contemporary communist states however look too much like pre modern despotic households (1997).
He sees a compromise as the answer. Rather than going one way or the other, the democratization of property and the modern workplace in particular is what is called
for (1997). This author clearly feels for the plight of the people like Marx but sees the impractical nature of communism. Indeed, any nation that has tried it has failed
