This paper discusses the question of whether or not learning is observable and is characterized by a change in behavior; or whether learning is thinking or a change in
thinking; and whether these two views can be integrated into one position. Discussion First, is learning observable? Learning is defined as "a relatively permanent change in behavior occurring
as a result of experience" (Wertheim). Further, he says, "Learning cannot be observed, it must be inferred from observing behavior" (Wertheim). Lets consider for a moment: can
we observe someone learning? Do we really see some sort of process taking place as we watch? The answer is no. We can see students in classrooms;
or workers listening to a training class; or a journeyman imitating a skilled craftsman, but we cannot actually see the process of learning as it takes place. We can
only see the results of the learning: the students pass their exams, the workers performance improves, and the journeyman successfully imitates his teacher. Thus, although we cannot see learning
taking place, we know that it has occurred because there is a change in behavior. Perhaps a better example than a classroom is someone who quits smoking because he
has read the literature, listened to the warnings, and learned that it is harmful to his health. There is a direct connection between learning and the change in behavior,
but its not possible to say when the actual learning took place. But does learning always imply a behavioral change? No. Its possible for someone to learn the
facts about smoking, for instance, and still smoke even knowing it could be harmful. Its also possible for students to learn but be unable to recall what theyve learned
