young man I was interviewing who had grown up on the foster care system. When we spoke on the phone, I thought I was meeting Pierre at his office,
but was surprised to find myself in a low income neighborhood of army green colored spec housing. When Pierre opened the door, I was intimidated by the image of
the 56" tall muscular young black man who seemed ill-prepared for any kind of formal interview. After we left his home and arrived at the Church of
Calvary Chapel and began to talk about the foster care system, I began to relate immediately to Pierre, age 23, who was strong, confident and personable. Hes a student,
a community member, a church participant, and a friend. Though these may not seem like incredible successes, his personal history and struggles that resulted from a life in the
foster care system suggest differently. Pierre believes that hes beaten the odds, that he is a success in spite of the foster care system. Many foster kids dont
beat the odds, the foster system beats them. Pierres story is a cautionary tale, one that provides some deep insight into the complex and emotionally charged nature events that
often place young children into foster care, as system in place to do the business of caring for young children. While some foster families have the best intentions and
work hard to provide healthy, happy homes, other foster parents enter the system for a paycheck and nothing else. One of the premises of the foster care system
is that its not in place to replace adoption, but to provide temporary homes for children who cannot stay with their biological parents for a variety of reasons, including substance
