are falling behind as it respects the world, something that will put the United States in a disadvantageous position in the future. Of course, there are private schools. Many wealthy
parents vie for private institutions and even those who are not very wealthy scrape together a few dollars to at least send their children to Catholic school. There is a
great deal of dissatisfaction with pubic education in America. There is also the attitude that success is up to the individual. They will be successful anywhere, whether they go to
private or public school. This is a point that seems to be conveyed by Colin Powells (1996) work My American Journey. In the book, Powell conveys the idea that public
education is something that is good. At least, he attended such institutions and without public education, he may not have gone to school at all. Powell (1996) remarks: "If the
Statue of Liberty opened the gateway to this country, public education opened the door to attainment here" (p.37). For Powell, and others who would not be able to afford a
prestigious private school, public education cleared a path for greatness. Yet, the majority of students in U.S. public institutions are not always so successful. It is likely that Powell is
an aberration. At least, he is a well known leader who has done a great deal in life. Yet, this does not mean that all students in public institutions will
do just as well. In fact, that is really not the likelihood at all. John Taylor Gatto (2003) was an exemplary New York City school teacher and wrote an
