dead, and for what? So we can watch millions of Iraqis and thousands of Americans die in yet another idiotic, pointless adventure to prove (I guess) that we have
bigger guns than anybody else on the planet. The anger that began in Southeast Asia still burns as strongly as ever. Movies and books about Vietnam arent as
plentiful as books about our other wars, possibly because we lost and got sent home with our tails in a sling; and possibly because we have yet to figure out
how to "classify" that war. Allegedly, we fought it to stop Vietnam from going Communist (once again, we stuck our fingers in somebody elses pie and told them how
to live), because back then we believed in the "domino theory," a piece of pseudo-intellectual bull puckey that says if one country goes Communist, the one next to it will
also turn red, virtually overnight, and the one next to that, and on and on. Not only does this theory not hold water, weve seen that Communism as a
system tends to collapse as unworkable after a while. All we have to do is wait. But no... Having lost some good friends "down South" I have trouble
watching Vietnam films, but if I had to pick one that seems to capture the horror, blood, panic, humor, and sheer waste of the whole exercise, it would probably be
"Platoon" (also an Oliver Stone film). I dont think anyones ever captured pure terror better than Stone in the scene where Charlie Sheen is on night patrol and runs
smack into the VC. With regard to the two properties discussed here, I think a book is always more evocative than a film, because we can use our own
