and Kevin Sim ask how the killing of 400 to 600 civilians could have possibly happened in light of the proud humanitarian ideals of the United States. The book
also wonders why the massacre-which was a national cover story overflowing with somber and frightening photos of piles of black-clad corpses- could have been so completely almost forgotten, even in
Vietnam. Bilton & Sim seem to point a disturbed and almost accusing finger at the government, the media, and society itself for failing to be devastated by the massacre
for any significant length of time. It was during the summer of 1983, that a black Vietnam vet named Varnardo Simpson barricaded himself inside a
small house in Mississippi, placing bars on the windows and extra locks on the doors. He had been diagnosed with severe post-traumatic stress disorder; his prognosis, according to doctors,
was very guarded and very poor. He was still sitting inside, shaking in distress, when he was visited six years later by the authors of Four Hours in My Lai,
who were interviewing members of Charlie Company. Simpson had taken part in the massacre at My Lai in March 1968; his subsequent life has followed a course of spiraling dysfunction,
paranoia and debilitating fear. He has reportedly even attempted suicide three times (emphasis Mansonnet, 1993. Assessing a character such as Simpsons, it seems markedly obvious
