The split was enclosed under a big umbrella of protestors against the war versus those in support of the war. In 1973, when America pulled out of Vietnam-we lost. We lost our dignity, caused millions to die, and we did not win. A year into the official war, military advisors recognized that Americas presence was a mistake-we had not entered into the war to win-we had entered only to prevent the spread of Communism. America was wrong (McNamara 46). This was also the conclusion reached by Frances FitzGerald in her 1972 Noble and Pulitzer Prize winning book Fire on the Lake. She predicted that the American way of life was so corrupt to the Asean ideal that the Vietnamese would resist Americas influence in South Vietnam. In 1998, it appears that she was wrong. The influence of Vietnam G.I.s had a positive influence on Vietnamese children, now adults. Some of the Vietnamese realized that Americans were, at the least, less cruel than the VC, and many had good hearts. Bonds were forged, and today that influence, along with the commercialism introduced to the Vietnamese during the war, has brought about new economic and political goals. Oliver Stones movies, Born on the Fourth of July and Platoon show how Americans protested and resisted the war. The truths reflected in these representations helped negate FitzGeralds resistance, and now, resistance has an entirely new face. WHY PROTEST THE WAR?
