has garnered criticism in the West for, thus far, failing to become the economic "tiger" that was predicted in the late 1990s. Furthermore, Westerners have focused on social problems, such
as child labor, and charges of bureaucratic corruption and evaluated Vietnam accordingly. This sort of negative evaluation of Vietnam fails to consider the tremendous progress that has been made
under the governments doi moi (renovation) policy. As the following examination of contemporary Vietnamese society will demonstrate, this society has come a long way over the last several decades.
However, such examination also shows that it is true that it still has a long way to go before Vietnam will begin to approach the economic development of some
of its neighbors, Nevertheless, Vietnams problems cannot be solved simply by the imposition of more punitive measures against criminality. A systematic approach to reform of its political process, a
political "doi moi" will have to be implemented to ensure Vietnams continued success. Contemporary Vietnam Vietnam, a country historically torn by successive wars, is acquiring the ability to be
prosperous in peace. Reforms that were started in the 1980s offered the rosy perspective of a country opened freely to foreign trade and investment (All go below, 2000). Vietnams substantial
numbers of literate and entrepreneur-inclined people, as well as its close proximity to China, made many foreign investors see this society as the next Asian "tiger" economy (All go below,
