its legacy may be. It was a failed war in the minds of most people, and a war that truly divided a nation in the end. The following paper analyzes
the war as it can be seen in Everything We Had by Al Santoli. Vietnam As most people know, the war in Vietnam began with a great deal
of support in the United States and a sense of innocence on the part of the soldiers who went over to the war in its beginning. But, as the war
grew the opposition grew both in the United States and in Vietnam. Santolis work is a compilation of the narratives of many soldiers who were there. The stories/experiences start with
the beginning of the war and then go throughout the war till the end, presenting the reader with many perspectives as the war progressed. In an early story one can
see perhaps the innocence and simplicity of the war at that time as one soldier remembers how Vietnam students would find the soldiers and practice their English with the
soldiers. The narrator states, in looking at the simplicity of the environment, "If we had an afternoon or a weekend off and it was a nice day, we could walk
a half mile to the beach, lay out a towel, and have this tropical bay with nice rolling waves that compared to the Riviera" (Santoli, 1985; 8). This is clearly
an image of simplicity as they would sit on the beach and young Vietnamese students would come converse with them about what they were learning. However, as the war
progressed the horrors became obvious to many soldiers. One narrative speaks of this as he finds a sense of refuge in teaching children in a small village, consciously putting aside
