Video-on-demand enables those customers to use their TV remote controls to order movies, home shopping services and other programs whenever they choose. Three main programming providers supply the video on demand programs on the NYNEX. They are Advanced Research and Technologies, Inc. (ARTI), Liberty Cable Television, and Urban Communication Transport Corp (Staff). The purpose of the trial was to test the video on demand services. Combining NYNEXs switching, storage, and transmission facilities with the diverse offerings of cable TV and other program providers did this (Staff). Video on demand was posited to give customers access to a wealth of video services, and allow them to watch a wide variety of programs of their choosing. The former system was analog-based, but it became digital in 1994. This greatly expanded the number of available programs (Staff).
