of the twenty-first century. As the games have changed, so, too, has the video game market. Once upon a time, video game designers were creating these games for
individuals who were at least of college age or older (Last, 2008). However, since most households currently have either a home computer, gaming console unit or both, the age
of video game players has dropped significantly. Usually, young children have played some type of video game by the time they are of school age. The games these
youngsters these children were exposed to, in all likelihood, contained some type of violent act. Among the most popular childrens video games is the Grand Theft Auto (GTA), a
role-playing series in which the child assumes the role of a villain who is rewarded for stealing cars, murdering police officers, and killing prostitutes who may have stolen their money.
This particular series has stirred considerable controversy because of both its premise and its increasingly graphic depiction of violence. There are supporters of these games that claim video
game designers are simply exercising their creativity and giving the youth market what it wants while activists and legal professionals argue these games are encouraging violent aggression in young people.
