than they have ever been in the history of mankind. One of these stimuli is video games. It can be theorized that the rising rate of violence in
out society is, at least to some degree, associated with the amount of violence our children are exposed to in the form of video games. While this theory has
yet to be definitively proven the correlations between current crime rates and the types of stimuli that our children are being exposed to though video games are quite astonishing.
If money talks, it certainly talks in the case of video games. Over 100 million titles were sold in 1997 (Helm PG). In
1993 video games grossed $5.3 billion year in the United States alone (Elmer-Dewitt, Dickerson and Jackson PG). This figure is particularly impressive given that it exceeded that spent going
to the movies (Elmer-Dewitt, Dickerson and Jackson PG). Worldwide the picture is no more promising, over $10 billion per year is spent on video games and one game can
top out at $500 million (Elmer-Dewitt, Dickerson and Jackson PG). "Mortal Kombat", one of the games which is considered more violent is one of the most popular in the
world. It is a brutally realistic kick boxing game in which the player is subjected to realistic hand to hand combat stimuli (Elmer-Dewitt, Dickerson and Jackson PG). "Tomb
Raider", the first video game featuring a "heroine" sold more than 9 million copies with its first two releases (Johnson PG).
