speaks of a great darkness within the soul of mankind, as well as a story that would be considered very distasteful to the women of the time. In this story Marlow goes through many different experiences and sees this darkness, this savage reality of mankind, and then must go back to the civilized world and inform Kurtz wife that her husband is dead. He must do it in a very tactful and simplistic manner, for she is, after all, only a woman and a woman with no concept of such harsh realities as those that her husband faced. The following paper discusses how Marlow approaches and talks with Kurtz wife, examining how the Victorian woman is represented through this woman. Kurtz Wife From the moment that Marlow knows he is going to see this woman, and he is looking at her picture, we gain a sense of understanding that women of this time were seen as not much less than angelic creatures with very sensitive demeanors. This is quite apparent when he fantasizes what she is like while looking at her picture: "She struck me as beautiful -- I mean she had a beautiful expression. I know that the sunlight can be made to lie, too, yet one felt that no manipulation of light and pose could have con- veyed the delicate shade of truthfulness upon those features. She seemed ready to listen without mental reservation, without suspicion, without a thought for herself" (Conrad Part III). In this he already has her defined as a woman who thinks nothing of herself, is somewhat angelic, and surely beautiful in perhaps a wise and knowledgeable way. However, this strength, selflessness, and wisdom does not extend to the world of men. Women in Victorian times were not expected to understand the dangers ...
