American Gothic and characterized by various "analogous historical revivals in the United States in the second half of the 19th century" (The Columbia Encyclopedia PG), truly was the beginning of
modern architecture. I. Styles and Definitions Understanding the language of Victorian architecture better prepares one
to fully appreciate the experience: Cornice - Molding covering where ceiling and wall meet. Dentils - Small, square ornamental blocks. Fenestration - Window arrangement. Gingerbread - Decoration particularly scroll
work, as on an elaborately decorated cake. Pediment - Pitched roof triangular shape. Found over doors and windows either arched or broken. Veranda - Long covered porch (gloss.htm).

and 16th century and popularized in the 1850s, was the result of London-type row houses -- the English Roman style. Characteristic of this variety is the Corinthian columns on
the front patio, angled bay windows and flat roof lines. The vertical lines accustomed to this style fit well with the row house effect, as do the tall, narrow
