Criminal justice is comprised of a variety of approaches to solving and preventing crime. Another aspect of
this system, however, is dealing with the victims. This emphasis is not surprising given that it is the victims of crime that suffer the worst. The victims of
violent crimes, in particular, suffer from both physical and psychological scars. These scars can result in tremendous loss both in the personal lives of these victims and in their
work lives. One way of alleviating at least part of that suffering is through victim assistance programs. These programs vary from those helping with counseling to those that
compensate the victim for the problems that they have endured. Some victims assistance programs are geared towards helping the victim deal with the criminal justice system itself.
Ironically, victim assistance is something that has been gaining more emphasis in only the last few decades. The criminal justice system for too long
only concentrated on justice from a "adversarial, offender-oriented" perspective (van Wormer 107). Today, however, we are approaching crime more and more frequently from the perspective of the victim as
