He is a man who believed in the American Dream as it simply related to working hard and doing ones job. He believed that by doing his job he would become more than he was, become a financial success, and find happiness after years of employment. But, Willy discovers he was wrong in many ways, slowly leading to his ultimate demise. The following paper examines how Willy Loman is both a victim and a victimizer. Willy Loman: Victim When the reader or viewer is first introduced to the play there is a clear sense that Willy is a victim. He is a simple man, worn out from working for decades, a man tired and perhaps even beyond exhaustion. "Even as he crosses the stage to the doorway of the house, his exhaustion is apparent" (Miller 12). He "thankfully lays his burden down," the burden being two sample cases of a salesman (Miller 12). He rubs the "soreness of his palms" and a "word-sigh escapes his lips" (Miller 12). This is the reader or viewers introduction to Willy and it is apparent he is around 60 years of age and worn out. It is obvious that he is a salesman and that he is getting no joy from a job he has obviously done for decades. This image is one that induces sympathy and empathy and thus presents the reader or viewer with a man who is clearly a victim of his society. In the character of his wife one can also see how he is a victim, for through her, a woman one can assume is not ignorant or stupid, the vision of a hard working simple man is seen. The narration of the play states, "she more than loves him, she admires him....his massive dreams ...
