Many people do not realize that while the military does offer substantial benefits to its volunteers, it does not really provide much for the measure of risk undertaken by the members of the military. In other words, while those who join do get benefits--and education benefits have increased in recent years--it seems that other benefits do not match the degree of risk taken on the job. The military should offer more for the veterans who have been injured while fighting for the country. Not too long ago, Sean Hannity announced a fundraising effort to reward children of deceased military men. Those who gave their lives for the country should at least be assured that their families are taken care of. While the military does offer many scholarships for those who go to war, it does not provide compensation for the offspring who are still young. What happens is that someone may die in a conflict and leave a young family to grow up with just one parent. That parent will have to save enough money for their small childrens future college fund, and this may prove difficult. One would think that if someone sacrifices their lives for their country, then the country should take care of their families. Of course, efforts like Hannitys and other private sector endeavors seem to fill the void. Yet, these are few and far between. The government should step in to increase veterans benefits. Not too long ago, there was a bill that would reduce the tax cut so that veterans benefits would increase, but that bill did not pass ("The Final," 2003).
