, a veterans advocacy group warned that veterans living in Washington state could be hit with as much as a $1,000 per year increase in their medical care, thanks
to a new administration proposal (Blumenthal, 2005). Not only that, but the plan could force almost half of the states veterans homes out, and perhaps even cause one of
the homes to close (Blumenthal, 2005). Further administration proposals include charging a $250 annual fee for access to care, and doubling copayments for prescription drugs (Blumenthal, 2005). These
increases would apply to single vets making more than $26,000 and married veterans whose annual incomes were more than $30,000 (Blumenthal, 2005). In addition, the Bush proposal would make
it more difficult for veterans to get into the homes; it would also drastically cut federal support for the veterans homes (Blumenthal, 2005). One of the main reasons for the
crackdown on veterans is the ballooning deficit, which is growing daily as the war in Iraq continues. Ironically, it is the veterans returning from that conflict, and from Afghanistan,
that are straining the system: the Bush administration has admitted that it "vastly underestimated the number of service personnel" that would require care (Edsall, 2005, p. A19). The
