in appears to be the version that has shaped most peoples conception of the story. This paper argues that Disney took the original tale and "sanitized" it to make it
suitable for children. The paper concentrates on three parts of the story that vary from version to version: the father figure; the role of animals in the story; and the
mutilations that occur in the Grimm version but nowhere else. Discussion Its most likely that of all the versions available, Disney used Charles Perraults 1697 story. In the Perrault, most
of the elements are already in place: the stepmother, the stepsisters, the prince and the weak father. In all the versions, Cinderellas mother has died and her father remarried a
very strong, domineering woman who has two daughters from her first marriage. The woman in all versions is the archetype of the "wicked" stepmother, and her daughters are relentlessly unpleasant
and treat Cinderella like a slave. This immediately begs the question: where is her father while all this is going on? In the Perrault tale, he is mentioned in
the first paragraph to get things moving, and then disappears. In the Grimm version, he appears at the beginning of the story and then again in later episodes: specifically, when
Cinderella comes home from the balls (there are two in most stories; Disney is the only one who has only one party), he recognizes that it could be Cinderella the
prince is searching for, and tries to help him find her. He is unsuccessful, as is the prince. And in the Disney film, he marries the widow and then dies
