In essence, what makes most of Twains stories come to life was his ability to use vernacular in many different ways, allowing us to see beyond the obvious cultural differences, and see the people for who they were. Bearing that in mind the following paper examines his short story "Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog" and its use of vernacular. Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog In the opening segment of Twains story we are presented with the narration that comes from a man who is clearly very well educated. His speech is incredibly proper and as such we are presented with a possibility that the story will be somewhat intellectual, though we are also under the impression that the story cannot be intellectual due to its title. With that in mind we present the following excerpt which comprises the first few opening lines of the story: "Dear Sir: -- Well, I called on good-natured, garrulous old Simon Wheeler, and inquired after your friend, Leonidas W. Smiley, as you requested me to do, and I hereunto append the result. If you can get any information out of it you are cordially welcome to it. I have a lurking suspicion that your Leonidas W. Smiley is a myth -- that you never knew such a personage, and that you only conjectured that if I asked old Wheeler about him it would remind him of his infamous Jim Smiley, and he would go to work and bore me nearly to death with some infernal reminiscence of him as long and tedious as it should be useless to me" (Twain NA).
