by regulators with the condition that Verizon sell off operations in 105 markets where both Verizon and Alltel operated (Reardon, 2009). Alltel customers in those areas are separate from the merger (Reardon, 2009). Alltels customers became Verizons customers at the completion of the sale. There is still much to sort out in this kind of merger. Each company has special consumer programs and each offers some different cellular phones. How all that will play out is not yet finalized. It takes a lot of time to iron out the many wrinkles in mergers. One thing is certain. Verizon has laid off both Alltel employees and Verizon employees although not all of the layoffs area specifically tied to the merger. One layoff happened in Alabama where Verizon had already laid off people. In a second round of layoffs in Alabama, Verizon released 42 more Alltel employees, most of which were in Little Rock (KATV 7, 2009). Verizon had a number of direct employees in Circuit City stores. Since this company is going to close, many of Verizons employees at those stores will lose their jobs (Goldstein, 2009). They planned to lay off at least 45 percent of their employees at Circuit City stores (Goldstein, 2009). Verizon officials said the company did not intend to lay off people but that is not what employees report on blogs (Goldstein, 2009). One employee in Philadelphia reported that dozens of representatives were laid off (Goldstein, 2009). In fact, these people report that Verizon has laid off dozens of workers who have been with the company for nine and more years (Goldstein, 2009).
