the research phase is carried out, the researchers typically deal with information in an isolated manner, intimately familiar with their own hypotheses and experimental design. They might rely primarily on
numerical expressions of information, due to their familiarity with what those numbers signify. However, once the researchers must present information outside their own group, it is necessary to adapt a
more verbal form of expression, wherein, even if one presents numerical data, one also expresses that data in a more generalized and conceptual form, so that readers can truly understand
the significant factors in reality that are referred to by that numerical data. For this reason, the majority of academic journal articles tend to use verbal expression when relating
research design and methodology, the findings and results of those methods, and the statistical significance of said results. Basic numerical information may be embedded into the verbal passages of exposition
as appropriate, but the bulk of numerical data is reserved for tables and appendices, generally speaking. Certainly, it is much easier to understand a paragraph verbally explaining why there are
more white sheep than black, than to infer the same information from looking at a line of formulae and calculations. However, there are certain risks inherent with the use
of verbal expression that should be acknowledged. Standardized language is important to assist verbal expression in conveying information with a degree of specificity and accuracy that can approximate the status
of numerical findings. Even so, differences in interpretation and individual expression of numerical data verbally tend to be evident and have been measured across dimensions such as the maturity of
the respondent, and even socioeconomic status (Bruine de Bruin, Fischoff, Millstein, & Halpern-Felsher, 1999). The Value of Verbal Expressions in Statistical Reports In statistical tests, one makes
