realize how important non-verbal communication is. This paper considers the impact of verbal and non-verbal communication in the courtroom; in public announcements by the police; and in corrections facilities, both
adult and juvenile. Discussion Communication is generally thought of as an exchange of information. There are at least three recognized forms of human communication: verbal, non-verbal and vocal (Ethical considerations
of trial behavior consultants, 1996; hereafter "Ethical considerations, 1996"). Verbal communication is comprised of "words and phrases used to convey a particular meaning in either an oral or written format"
(Ethical considerations, 1996). Vocal communication is concerned with such things as "voice level, tone, and quality," in addition to "pitch, inflection, intonation and rate of speech" (Ethical considerations, 1996). Finally,
there is non-verbal communication, which consists of such things as "eye contact, movements, gestures, touch, posture and body orientation, facial behaviors, and personal appearance" (Ethical considerations, 1996). Non-verbal communication is
able to convey meaning without using any additional means, and is thought to be the most powerful of the three (Ethical considerations, 1996). That would seem to be counterintuitive-why
would the things people do not say make a greater impression than a speech, for instance? The answer probably has to do with the fact that as humans, we have
