Venus figure of Willendorf through articles provided by the student requesting this paper. Venus of Willendorf In the first article provided
the author notes that, the Venus of Willendorf statue is a "statuette of a female figure. It was discovered in 1908 by archaeologist Josef Szombathy...It is carved from an oolitic
limestone that is not local to the area, and tinted with red ochre" (Wikipedia [2], 2007). This author notes that ever since the discovery of this particular statue, and the
naming of the statue, many more similar statures have been found and "They are collectively referred to as Venus figurines" (Wikipedia [2], 2007).
What makes this statue, and those referred to as Venus statues, similar and quite distinctive involves the enlarged representation of the figures breasts, vulva, and belly in most cases (Wikipedia
[2], 2007). By contrast the arms, hand, and feet are relatively small if existent at all (Wikipedia [2], 2007). In addition, it seems that the figures all have the womans
head, with a face that is not discernable, looking downward (Wikipedia [2], 2007). It is speculated that perhaps these figures are distorted in
this manner because it essentially seems to emulate what the view is from a womans perspective as she looks down, if she is pregnant (Wikipedia [2], 2007). In perspective the
