would not ruin the appetites of tennis enthusiasts around the world. Venus won. She made history in England but she also made history in a variety of places prior to
that fateful day. Upon her arrival at Wimbledon, Venus was the proud winner of seven WTA Tour singles titles (Nelson 12). She defeated her
younger sister, Serena, in the 1999 Lipton final; she made history there too as they were the first sisters to meet in a WTA Tour final (12). Venus possessed four
WTA Tour doubles titles, inclusive of the 1999 French Open, which she won with Serena (12). She made history in other ways too. Venus was the first African American woman
to reach the U.S. Open final since Althea Gibson did in 1958("First" PG). When Venus accepted her award at Wimbledon in 2000, she said: "Its really great because Ive worked
so hard all my life to be here. Its strange. I always dream I win a Grand Slam. When I wake up, its a nightmare. Now that Ive got it,
I dont have to wake up like that any more " ("Victorious" PG). And while the talent seems to have been a part of her biology, tennis stars are seemingly
made and not born. She in fact says so in her speech. Venus did work much of her life to get that award. While there was certainly innate ability in
