Harvards promoter of the idea of disruptive technologies and their effects, Clayton Christensen, turned his attention to the health care industry in 2000. Christensen, Bohmer and Kenagy (2000) explain that technology generally outpaces individuals ability to fully utilize it, and that such has been the case in health care over the past several years. Though other more dramatic procedures exist, they are costly and often provide the patient with a higher degree of treatment than his condition requires. Ventricular assist devices do not necessarily serve the low end of the market in terms of total cost to the patient or insurer, but they do serve the low end of the market in terms of the procedures and total medical attention they replace. The purpose here is to discuss the devices expected product life cycle. Current Product Life Cycle Stage Ventricular assist devices exist in the area open to the emergence of disruptive technologies, defined as "simpler, more convenient, and less costly offerings initially designed to appeal to the low end of the market" (Christensen, Bohmer and Kenagy, 2000; p. 105). The simpler offerings improve so much over time that they ultimately become better suited to the needs of many consumers, rather than only to those at the low end of the market (Christensen, Bohmer and Kenagy, 2000). The area of disruptive technology is the same one through which personal computers emerged in a mainframe world, and it is the same one by which angioplasty came to be a standard alternative to bypass surgery (Christensen, Bohmer and Kenagy, 2000).
