San Jose Mercury News bluntly and concisely assesses the progress of cardiac care in writing, "Until the 20th century, doctors had little more than a stethoscope to detect an ailing heart. If you were headed for a heart attack, no one knew - or would have known how to prevent it. If you had a heart attack, you died" (Krieger, 2003; p. ITEM03246087). Such rarely is the case today, of course. The first heart transplant performed by Dr. Christian Bernard in South Africa in 1967 made worldwide news. Early transplants often were unsuccessful, but todays have become nearly routine, if not entirely common. Several devices exist that can create a bridge of life until a suitable heart can be located; others provide enough benefit that they can stand alone in keeping an individual alive. Some heart patients wear a defibrillator attached to them or a pacemaker implanted within them, others have ventricular assist devices. The purpose here is to discuss some of the ventricular assist devices available for use today. Heart Function A ventricular assist device (VAD) is a "circulatory support device that augments function of the left ventricle, the right ventricle, or both; it consists of one or two implanted or extracorporeal pumps with afferent and efferent conduits attached so as to provide mechanically assisted pulsatile blood flow" (Dorlands, 2004).
