open. Important and statistically significant findings The researchers found no statistically significant difference (P=0.296) between the two subjects groups when they were categorized by cause. The Apache II scoring
system was used to evaluate the results, and this instrument found no significant differences between the two groups, as there was a median of 24 for the "open" group and
22 or the "closed." Also the results displayed homogeneity between the two groups in regard to severity of illness. Brief overview of other outcomes The authors cite where Silvas
1993 study evaluated pulmonary infection and also compared open and closed endotracheal suction systems. The results of this study indicated that the open suction system had an 84.9% infection rate,
while the closed system had only a 60.8% infection rate. Nevertheless, Silva does not report if reintubation occurred in the sample and this is considered to be a primary risk
