the backdrop of political intrigue makes this...one of Shakespeares better plays, even though it is one of his earliest works" (Sarkies). Another critic argues that, "Titus Andronicus is a play marked by acts of horrific violence and littered with death and the destruction of others. Each violent act, however, serves to explain and sometimes encourage the motives of the plays memorable characters and impart a very tightly knotted plot" (McLucas). In the midst of all this violence, death and destruction lies the theme of revenge, as well as the subtle theme of metamorphosis. Revenge is, however, the most obvious theme and as such will receive more attention herein. This is the case due to the nature of the play which, according to most critics, involves "Vendetta, revenge, murder and deceit" (Kirk). First off we discuss the theme of metamorphosis, which is subtle, yet clearly spelled out when we note that Ovids same titled book is mentioned in the place on numerous occasions. McLucas, for example, states how "Metamorphosis is mentioned in the play on several occasions. This analogy is first brought out by Lavinia in Act IV, scene one" wherein "The young Lucius has a copy of the book which Lavinia uses to explain how she was Ravished and wronged, as Philomela was . . . (IV. I. 52). The book is also mentioned in Act V, scene three, when Titus asks Saturninus" the following "My lord the Emperor, resolve me this: Was it well done of rash Virginius [Philomelas father] To slay his daughter with his own right hand, Because she was enforced, stained, and deflowered?
