In a portrait of Philip IV of Spain by Diego Velazquez and a portrait of Comtesse Dhoussonville by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres we have two paintings that are, at first glance, quite similar in that they are portraits of powerful or famous or stately individuals. The following paper compares and contrasts the two paintings. Velazquez and Ingres First off, as noted in the introduction, both of these paintings are portraits of, at the very least, stately people. We may not know who they are from a historical standpoint, but the paintings indicate that they were powerful or well known figures of their time. This is evident in their clothing and their stance. Though each portrait presents the individual slightly differently, there are enough similarities that speak of power and strength and position. The paintings both have the individual facing somewhat off to their left, and as such both of the paintings are almost profiles. Each painting also depicts almost the same amount of the figure. With the painting of Philip IV the portrait cuts off at about mid-thigh, whereas the painting of the Comptesse cuts off perhaps at knee level. We see both hands of each individual and we also see that both individuals are looking at the artist who is painting them. From these perspectives we can see that much of both paintings, in terms of presentation of the figure, is similar if not almost the same. This may well be due to the fact that most portraits were done in this fashion, despite the time difference in the creation of the works. In terms of the style, both are very realistic, although Velazquez painting is far more impressionistic. This is evident in the style of painting and the refinement of brush strokes. ...
