was on the rise and there was a resurgence of interest in the Italian arts and music (Fitzgerald, 2004). The image of a veiled woman was a favorite topic of
among the school of Italian artists that arose at that time, which included Pietro Rossi (Fitzgerald, 2004). Frequently in Italian culture, the image of a veiled woman is used to
embody Italy, in a manner similar to the way that Britannia stands for England, Hibernia for Ireland and Lady Liberty for the US (Fitzgerald, 2004). The marble that Rossi
used for this work is pure white, which is suggestive of purity and innocence. The veil that the woman is wearing is thrown over her head and drapes in semi-circular
folds that range from one shoulder to the next about her neck. The veil covers her face, as one can see the almost diagonal folds that are particularly prominent from
her right eye to her chin. But, as this suggests, the features of the womans face are clearly visible behind her veil. Her eyes are cast downward in a demure
fashion, and there is a hint of sadness about her expression, which connotes that her downward gaze comes from grief or contemplation rather than being coy or sexually suggestive. While
it is hard to guess what age the woman might be, she appears to be young and she is quite beautiful, with classic features and a strong aquiline nose. The
bust sits on a pedestal and extends to just below her shoulders, with only the suggestion of arms under the folds at the top of her torso. The bottom of
