Atonement and No Country For Old Men are each characterized by a formal multiplicity or complexity that relates to the capacities of the novelistic
form to deploy contrasting viewpoints and narrational styles, including minimalism in No Country For Old Men and multi-level frames in Atonement. The techniques are utilized to achieve certain effects. These
effects are utilized by the authors and also by the filmmakers to contrast the minute with vast and sweeping scenes, but each in different ways; one depending upon complexity to
explain a sweeping love story, the other using simplicity to create a sense of complexity. Atonement is a story about narration and how
the paper is the medium on which a story is spun, in this case a story sweeping over a broad landscape that begins with the visual frame of a time
of plenty that shifts to war and a time of less than plenty. This is a time when the upper class loses its sway over the lower classes, where it
could be atoning for its lavishness and sins where it has finally dragged the lower class along with it, in this case, in the physical form of Robbie. This is
accomplished through broad strokes of story lines in the book and long film shots intermixed with intimate closeups full of sex and violence to pull the audience in and out
