and for the most part they are considered good for they refer to a greater and more powerful entity than the individual. Yet, at the same time religions, primarily monotheistic
religions in this discussion, battle constantly, neither respecting nor believing the other for they are firmly grounded in the belief that their God, which may be the same God as
someone elses, is the right path. The following paper examines, first, if it is possible for monotheistic religions to peacefully coexist with one another. The second section of the essay
examines if some religions possess certain qualities or beliefs that would make them more likely to live in peace with other religions. Is It Possible?
Most people would perhaps like to assume that all monotheistic religions could live in peace with one another. However, the truth may be otherwise, based perhaps
on nothing more than human nature. Smith (1983) states that, "Caught in a value vacuum, we feel a need to set out upon a new course, to find a fresh
foundation for the conduct of our lives" (14). From this perspective one could well note that a person may seek an answer to life, and find it in religion, and
part of that answer may well be an aggressive and meaningful religious approach. People who are lost and find value in something sometimes utilize that new found value in a
negative way, even if it based on something good as seen in a religion. Smith (1983) also notes that even in the
Bible life and a mans endeavors are futile: "All is futile. What real value is there for a man in all the gains he makes beneath the sun?" (21). This
