art. Bearing that in mind the following paper examines five different periods of art in history. Within each period the paper discusses painting, sculpture, and architecture. The five periods are
Classical, Romanesque, Gothic, and Early Renaissance. The source used for the paper is the third edition of "A History of Western Art" by Laurie Schneider Adams. Classical
The Classical Period in Greek Art was a time of change, as are most art periods. In relationship to paintings Adams indicates that "The Greek interest in naturalism led to
a delight in illusionism and trompe-loeil. Zeuxis, for example...was reputed to have painted grapes that fooled birds into believing they were real. By the late 5th century Zeuxis was painting
from live models and therefor directly from nature" (87). In relationship to the sculpture of the time period we have Kritios Boy, which is attributed to the sculptor Kritios
though the creator is not definitely known. "[T]his sculpture reflects a moment of self-awareness in Greek history that is marked by the change from Archaic to Early Classical" (Adams NA).
As Adams indicates, the archaic smile is now gone and stylization has decreased. Another marked change involved the materials used. Adams states that "Another Early Classical development was the widespread
change from marble to bronze for large scale sculpture" (91). Romanesque The Romanesque period of time involved a great deal of religion in paintings as well as in
sculpture. In fact, it seems as though every type of art revolved around religion. Even the most depressing of art, such as the relief sculpture Gislebertus, Last Judgement, is a
