But, it appears that one of the most important factors involved their relationship with Rome and their expansionist ideals that were materialized through the Crusades which took England all over the known world at the time. As they engaged in these Crusades they also came in contact with many cultures, enlightening England and their way of life. In other parts of Europe there was not the economic or political support or success and as such they primarily relied on England for such things. One author notes, "The prosperity arising from peasant agriculture, growing urbanism and burgeoning population growth meant England could focus more directly on its near neighbours Wales, Scotland and to a lesser extent Ireland, in the 13th and early 14th centuries" which indicates a financial success that could allow for such involvement (James, 2007). England and Exploration It seems that England was far less involved in any exploratory or colonization endeavors until the 16th century. During the 16th, and especially the 17th, centuries, England was experiencing many internal problems that consumed much of its attention. While prior centuries had proven slowly successful these times proved otherwise: "17th century England was troubled by the same kinds of problems as the rest of Europe--political , economic, and social problems made worse by religious division" (England in the 16th and 17th Centuries, 2004). At the same time it was such troubles that also encouraged England to become involved in exploration and colonization for they realized much could be benefited from such endeavors as colonizing would bring in revenue and exploration would ensure England was active ...
