Prisons are the way most of the world chooses to punish criminals for their crimes. The specifics of a prison, however, can vary significantly.
They can be large or small, high security or otherwise. So too can the types of prisoners that are housed in prisons vary significantly as can the type
of rehabilitation they receive there. The purpose of this paper is to detail the evolution of the prison system and to compare and contrasts the federal prison system with
the various state systems that are found across the nation. Prisons serve to house prisoners that have received sentences of one
year or more (Foster, 2006). Almost two thousand prisons exist across the nation (Foster, 2006). Although there are private and local prisons as well, this number is composed
primarily of state and federal prisons and in 2003 these prisons housed over 1,300,000 felons (Foster, 2006). The prison experienced a
radical increase beginning in the 1980s and the declared War on Crime (Foster, 2006). Interestingly, the population increase in prisons began to slow in 2000 (Foster, 2006). There
