Essay / Research Paper Abstract
This 14 page paper looks at issues concerning the way in which primary research may be undertaken to assess the relationship between fuel hedging and profitability in airlines. The variables which need to be considered in the way that profitability is assessed are all outlined and the ways in which both quantitative data and qualitative data may be collected. The bibliography cites 10 sources.

either as a proactive strategy to manage costs, or as a defensive strategy in order to minimise the potential increases in fuel costs. However, the practice is risky, as many
airlines found in 2008 when significant losses were incurred as a result of hedging. The US airline United is one example, in the third quarter of 2008 this airline lost
a total of $544 million (Associated Press, 2008), conversely others, such as Southwest, although having suffered some bad years appear to have performed very well aided by a hedging strategy.
The question is whether or there is a relationship between fuel hedging and airline profitability. To assess this a literature review can only be of limited value, indicated past
studies and the potential influences, in order to undertake up to date reseach primary reseach needs to be undertaken to assess if there is a causal link between hedging practices
and the performance of an airline in terms of its profitability. Using a mixed method methodology data can be gathered using both
quantitative and qualitative reseach. Quantitative research relies more on a large amount of results, with the data being recorded often being predominately numerical, it is suitable to be used as
a method of determining cause and effect relationships (Curwin and Slater, 2007). The methodologies will often be based on scientific procedures of investigation. Quantitative research includes descriptive, correlational, quasi-experimental and
experimental. Qualitative research is narrower and more concentrated by looking to information to be gained in-depth from a smaller quantity of subjects (Curwin and Slater, 2007). Often this research
will be word based with methods such as recorded in-depth interviews and other data which is not so easily classified (Curwin and Slater, 2007).
