An 8 page paper discussing the reduced leisure time that Americans now need to try to reclaim. Children can be as stressed as adults, and teens are under increasing pressure to compile a resume acceptable to college admissions counselors. One of the benefits of reduced leisure time is that it does have to be planned. Some of the chores that must be done can become family projects, and some wonderful family times have arisen from such work times. Even so, we need to strive to reclaim balance in our lives, and restore some of the leisure time we lost over the past several years. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

Marketers and futurists in the 1950s told our parents through newsreels of all the wonderful inventions that were coming our way and how much drudge labor they would save. Dishwashers would relieve us of the need to wash, dry and put away the dishes after dinner each night, indeed after each of the three meals that generally were made at home each day. Automatic washing machines would accept dirty laundry and produce washed, rinsed and spun-dry clothes and linens. It would no longer matter what the weather was like outside, because those clean clothes could go into the automatic dryer... The "dreamers" of the 1950s had a long list of conveniences that they said would come to be commonplace in every household. Freezers would ease the annual chore of putting up food for the winter; electronic ovens would cook food in a fraction of the time that conventional cooking required. We would have so much extra time, according to the futurists of the 50s. Reality Arises Those futurists dreams did indeed come to pass. In times past, the nuclear family consisted of a father who worked for money, a mother who worked to keep the household running and children who were expected to do specific chores each day as a matter of course.
