One of his paintings was "Still Life with a Plate of Onions" (1889). The following paper analyzes the painting in terms of form and content, arguing that the painting represented the most stable thing, perhaps, in Van Goghs life at the time. Still Life with a Plate of Onions While Van Goghs life was incredibly depressing, it was also quite simple and predictable in some ways. This particular painting reflects that sense of predictability through its form and content. The painting, as the title suggests, is a still life that contains a plate of onions. The painting is also of a table top where the plate of onions resides. Along with the plate of onions is a pipe, a coffee pot, a letter, a book, a candle, and a bottle of wine perhaps. It is a very structured painting that illustrates simplicity in the form as well as the content. There is nothing surprising about the painting and as such is predictable in terms of its position in Van Goghs life it seems. Again, Van Gogh was not necessarily predictable, though one could argue that he was predictable in his mental instability. But, he did possess patterns and habits that did not necessarily change despite the mental illness that afflicted him. This painting reflects those patterns, that stability, that may well have allowed Van Gogh to deal with life as successfully as he was able. Without such habits, such patterns, such predictability, Van Gogh may not have been able to paint as his mind was always wandering.
