would come into their own and contribute many great works to society. In fact, most people are familiar with the later period when Van Gogh and others would seemingly revolutionize
the art world. However, it was during the latter seventeenth and early eighteenth century, that many artists and writers would emerge in their own right. John Bacon for example was
a sculptor who lived during the eighteenth century and Watteau was a French painter. It does seem that while many artists were around, it would not be a time of
significant change in art, at least not in terms of style or significant notoriety. The change of greatest interest is perhaps the acceptance of
art and literature. Prior to this period, Leonardo Da Vinci revolutionized science and art, but that was during the early part of the sixteenth century. Still, perhaps his ideas would
prompt change and be a catalyst for the Enlightenment. The Enlightenment paved the way for free thought in art and a myriad of new movements which would come about in
subsequent decades. The age of Enlightenment would change everything and the world would enter a modern, and less religious, period. Science would emerge to replace the superstitious and less credible
beliefs of the day. New thinking would also come about in terms of liberty and freedom and this saw revolutions. The American Revolution and French Revolution would come at the
end of the eighteenth century, ushering in a period where democracy would create a brave new world. Vincent Van Gogh was a Dutch painter who was born in 1853i.
