for Van Gogh who would ultimately, so the story goes, cut off his ear for Gauguin. They were clearly both painters of the same time, and they were both painters
that were interested in similar subject matter and style. The following paper examines and analyzes two of their works, discussing them separately and then combined. The painting examined are Vincent
Van Goghs Madame Roulin with her Baby Marcelle (1888) and Paul Gauguins Tahitian Woman Bathing (1892). Van Goghs Madame Roulin with her Baby Marcelle Van Gogh was apparently fascinated
with painting this particular family at the time this painting was done. One author notes that in this particular winter, the winter of 1888, the weather was particularly bad. As
such, "the bitter north wind and the freezing rain forced Vincent van Gogh to work indoors. Vincent turned his energy to portrait painting, and he convinced his friend Joseph Roulin
and his family to sit for him, resulting in Madame Roulin with her Baby Marcelle" (Mancoff [1]). It is a very bold and a very warm painting, which perhaps
makes sense considering Van Gogh was stuck indoors due to harsh weather and as such was likely seeking warmth in his work. The figures are boldly outlined, although the dark
(black) lines vary in thickness throughout the painting. The figures are also well centered in the painting with little moving off of the canvas which makes for the figures becoming
very central figures. The womans dress, from around her knees down, runs off the canvas, as does a small part of the chair she sits upon. But, for the most
part these figures, of a mother holding an infant, are very equally balanced within the frame of the canvas. As noted, the colors are very warm. The background of
