painting is on public display at The Getty Center Los Angeles. Van Gogh drew his inspiration for the work from the asylums garden, but it is also believed that he
was "influenced by the decorative patterning of Japanese woodblock prints" ("Irises"). Van Gogh considered "Irises" to be a study and his brother commented that it is a "beautiful study full
of air and life" ("Irises"). This aptly describes the mood of the painting, which is of bright sunshine, and the glorious profusion of color that the irises create. My
initial reaction to the painting is that Van Gogh captures the full beauty of the garden and this conveys his joy and appreciation of that beauty, recreating this emotion in
the viewer. The initial reaction also is that Van Gogh has accurately represented what he saw, but on closer examination, the viewer begins to appreciate the way that he balanced
composition in terms of line, space, texture, color and shape. The upper left-hand corner features a grouping of bright orange flowers, which are smaller and less finely detailed than
the irises. Some vaguely indicated white flowers fill in the space across the top of the canvas, but it is the orange flowers, which are possibly marigolds, draw the eye
to the left. Directly below these flowers, the iris bed begins and builds in height so that the flowers on the right are the tallest. A solitary white iris is
in the grouping directly below the marigolds and this factor also naturally attracts the gaze of the viewer as the line carries upward to the right and then downward to
the next grouping of irises, which occupies the bottom far-right corner. In the foreground on the left is mottled, textured color that suggests the earthen colors of the ground beneath
