of vampires is that they are a subject whose characteristics have varied considerably over time. Some contend, in fact, that vampires have been a reflection of the society and
culture in which they were purported to exist. In many ways, however, the same threat which they may have presented in times long past are still a threat to
this very day. This threat has little to do, however, with losing our souls to the living dead, it has more to do with allowing the circumstances of the
time to control our thoughts and our emotions. The first task in examining the particulars of vampire accounts is distinguishing between the terms
"legend", "myth", and "folklore". Properly used, the term "folklore" is applied to stories which are assumed to be false (Peardon PG). The term "myth", on the other hand,
is reserved by anthropologists and folklorists for those stories which deal with the creation of the world (Peardon PG). The term "legend" is applied to accounts which are told
as true (Peardon PG). The term "legend" it seems would be more appropriately applied to vampires, after all the cultures from which vampire stories originated considered them very much
