They felt part of Sam’s team, despite low wages, but most of this was due to Sam’s treatment of employees, which was exceptional for its time. Little personal touches once defined the psychological contract between Wal-Mart and its employees. That has all changed and what is needed is a return to the original contract. Some report that within six months of Waltons death, however, the dynamic changed and Wal-Mart management admittedly forgot the team of underpaid employees, and became focused strictly on consumer and vendor relations. Ever since, Wal-Mart has faced a number of employee problems ranging from sexual harassment suits to unfair employment practice suits by the U.S. government to organized union threats within both the U.S. and Canada, not to mention numerous boycotts by consumer groups against the out of control proliferation of the chain. While the suits have all been dropped or settled and Wal-Mart is not yet a union shop, extremely high turnover indicates necessary change. Observations of the Previous Psychological Contract Wal-Marts sales are at $1 billion, but in 1979 this was an annual figure. By 2001, it was a daily figure. This is partly due to a 100 percent increase in the number of retail stores, but it is mostly due to managing and constantly reducing expenses. One of these controlled overhead expenses was and is employee costs, which are tightly controlled despite the growing costs of health care. According to many sources, Wal-Mart pays its employees some of the lowest wages in the retail industry, but it was not until recently that this has become a source of contention (Bolton, 2004, Gimein, 2002).
