diverse workforce could be helpful. Discussion A diverse workforce offers numerous advantages to a company, including improved customer service due to the fact that customer service personnel will understand the
needs of customers better; a company with a diverse workforce will be able to attract better employees; it will have a higher retention rate; it will be able to build
better relationships with stakeholders, customers and employees; it will have a "greater sense of unity as an organisation" and it will have "access to a broader range of ideas and
approaches" (Miller, 2008, p. 7). Examining some of these factors more closely will give us concrete examples of the importance of diversity. Take customer service for example. Everyone has
had the experience of calling customer service and listening to someone who doesnt understand the language very well trying to help the caller. Often they are reading from a "script"
and cannot deviate from it if the call is about a matter not covered by their instructions. They dont have the linguistic skills to deal with the problem if it
goes off-topic. If, instead of floundering around for a long time-and often running up a huge bill-the customer service clerk could simply turn the call over to someone fluent in
the callers language, as well as understanding their culture, it would be a much smoother operation. In addition, having a diverse workforce enables companies to look at a widely varying
set of opinions on issues (Greenberg, 2004). For instance, a company might want to open a facility overseas, and decide that it would be advantageous to locate it in a
