test measures what it purports to measure. We can think of it this way: if we deem a person to be reliable, we generally mean that we can depend on that person doing what he says when he says he will do it. When we say something is valid, we usually mean that it is accepted as truth. In research, reliably and validity are essential for the research to be accepted as something that has value and that promotes knowledge. Reliability means that if the research study were duplicated, the same results would occur (Experiment-Resources.com, 2011a; Experiment-Resources.com, 2011b). The research can be repeated with the same results or very similar results. It is consistent and dependable. When talking about tests, for instance, one of the processes to determine its reliability is test-retest reliability. This means that the same person will score within a certain range when they take the same test again at some time in the future (Experiment-Resources.com, 2011a). This does not hold true under certain conditions even if the test is reliable. For instance, if that person suffered a trauma in the interim, they are likely to score differently on the test (Experiment-Resources.com, 2011a). These are issues a good researcher is aware of and takes into consideration. Researchers will use repeat sample groups to reduce the possibility of an abnormal group skewing the results. If results are dramatically different between the groups, something is wrong with the design and the results are unreliable (Experiment-Resources.com, 2011a). Validity measures to what extent the research or a test actually measures what it intends to measure. There are different types of validity. Internal validity determines if the design of the experiment is structured properly and includes all of the steps needed for a scientific research study (Experiment-Resources.com, 2011b).
