Valero Energy, founded in 1955, with headquarters in San Antonia, Texas, and sales of $81.36 billion. The company is the largest oil refiner in North
America and operates in a number of markets as well as the refining there are also wholesale marketing, distribution and transportation of products which include asphalt, lubricants, jet fuels, diesel
and low sulphur diesel as well as other refined products such as home heating oil. In December 2005 the company owned an operated a total of 18 refineries all in
the US, Aruba and Canada. In retail terms the company owns and operates 1,008 retail outlets selling a range of items
which also include fountain drinks, confectionary and snacks as well as fuel (Valero, 2005). As well as a selling through a further 5,000 retail outlets that the company does not
own. The company has a total level of 22,068 employees and with an income level per employee of $163,000 and revenue per
employee of $4 million per employee. The company has the capacity to refine a total of 3.3 million barrels of oil a day (Valero, 2005).
Marathon Oil Corp, with annual revenues of $56.8 billion has a longer history back to the nineteenth century founded in 1887 with head quarters in Houston, Texas (Marathon,
