In a world where concern seems to grow daily over the possibilities of Avian Flu and various other diseases that previously had relatively little impact on human populations, vaccines
have become a more and more frequent topic of conversation. Vaccines, after all, have worked in the past even on such life-threatening diseases as polio, diptheria, and smallpox.
Vaccines have the potential to boost our immune system so that we can fight disease. Vaccines are disease-specific of course. A polio vaccine, for example, is ineffective against
smallpox and vice versa. Vaccines work because they contain antigens and/or antibodies that are effective against a specific disease. A vaccine can vary significantly in regard to
how it is manufactured. Vaccines serve to stimulate our bodys immune response on a much lower and safer level than it would be
stimulated in the presence of the full-fledged disease. Our bodys immune response is triggered by the presence of antigens. Antigens are usually but not always proteins. They
are specific to a particular disease. When they enter our body they become a foreign intruder and the body initiates a defense response in an attempt to eradicate them.
The defense response staged by our immune system includes the production of antibodies, blood proteins that act on a molecular level
by binding with the antigens so that they can be more easily removed from the system. Vaccines stimulate the production of antibodies so that when or if a disease
does enter our body they will already be present in full force and more capable of dealing with the disease in an efficient and systematic manner.
